A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, & A Great War

By: Haven Today

Had there been no Great War, there would have been no Hobbit, no Lord of the Rings, no Narnia, and perhaps no conversion to Christianity by C. S. Lewis.

The First World War laid waste to a continent and permanently altered the political and religious landscape of the West. For a generation of men and women, it brought the end of innocence—and the end of faith. Yet for J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination.

In the first book of it’s kind, Professor Joseph Loconte brilliantly tells the untold story of how WWI dramatically impacted these two literary greats … as well as the famous characters we would later know and love. For your gift to the ministry, we would love to send you either the audiobook version or print edition as our way of saying “thanks for your generous support.

Below, you can watch a video preview of the book or listen to a sample of the audiobook. Whether you choose the print edition or audio version, we are confident this book will deepen your faith and shed light on how Tolkien and Lewis both rediscovered faith, friendship, and heroism in the First World War.

The audiobook is narrated by Dave Hoffman, who is an Emmy Award nominated and Voice Arts Award-winning voiceover artist. In the following sample, you can preview the opening lines of the first chapter: “The Funeral of a Great Myth.”

Unlike a generation of young writers who lost faith in the God of the Bible, Tolkien and Lewis produced epic stories infused with the themes of guilt and grace, sorrow and consolation. Giving an unabashedly Christian vision of hope in a world tortured by doubt and disillusionment, the two writers created works that changed the course of literature and shaped the faith of millions.
