"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise."
(PSALM 111:10)

Psalm 111
We often fear what we don’t like: spiders, heights, storms, dark alleys. We fear what we think can harm us. We fear the future. Typically, we don’t fear what we think can be to our advantage. Do you fear God? He has the power to destroy us – and could because of our sin and His holiness. But His blessings abound to us. He loves us.

Not unlike the child who has a healthy fear of his father, it is fitting for us to have a fear of our all-powerful Creator and Ruler. “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31, ESV). The earthly father loves his son, even is willing to do everything it would take to protect and keep his son. How much more so for our heavenly Father who loves us, His children!

Not just powerful, God is merciful, gracious and good. If He meant to destroy us, He would not have sent His Son to die for our sins. He is our Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer. To see God as Lord over all yet shrug with indifference would be foolish. Instead, we give Him praise and stand in awe.
