Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines… yet will I rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.

Habakkuk 3:17-18
Since my stroke, my mind rushes with concerns: what if I can’t find a job to help support my family? What if I never drive or hike again? Will life ever seem normal? The fear of what might or might not happen can be crippling. What if, in fact, God is saying “No” to all my pleadings?
The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3) heartens those of us struggling with these kinds of concerns and questions. After being threatened with death in King Nebuchadnezzar’s fiery furnace for failing to bow to his golden image, the three men told the king that God could indeed deliver them. They also confidently added, “But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods…” (v. 18). What an encouragement to see how these men trusted God with the outcome of their dismal situation. They knew it might end badly, yet they trusted.
You and I, too, can turn over to God the outcomes of the matters that worry us. We can glorify God by trusting in Him, even if our desires are not specifically met.
