“Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.”

Matthew 13:34
Jesus used stories to communicate truths He wished to teach. The parables He told stayed long in His first hearers’ minds, the same way they do with us when we hear or read them now. Crowds followed Jesus to hear Him talk, forgetting entirely what time of day it was or even if they ought to stop and eat. Isn’t that how it is when you’re reading or hearing a really good story?
My husband, a pastor, has marveled at how a fitting illustration will stick with people long after the rest of the sermon is forgotten. Yet he always admits that even the best analogies fall short.
When God sent His Son into this world in human flesh, His “illustration” was complete. His people hardly imagined that Jesus’ life—from the humble birth as a baby in Bethlehem to the
Cruel death on the cross at Calvary—was the story they’d had glimpses of for thousands of years. The greatest tragedy was when many did not realize that the very Creator of the story of their lives was right in their midst. Don’t miss Him as He speaks to and calls you.
