“A wife of noble character who can find?”

Proverbs 31:10a
Many a hardworking wife who knows the Proverbs 31 list of qualities to measure up to is glad for that opening question. Could anyone ever find a wife like this? She serves her husband, family, and community. She is ambitious and trustworthy. She prepares food and clothing for the family and the poor. She finds bargains, stays in shape, purchases real estate, and speaks wisdom and kindness at all times. It’s an overwhelming list! How could any woman accomplish it all?
The godly wife need not feel burdened to meet this perfect standard. The principles set out in the closing of Proverbs are things a wife would do well to aim for. But the Lord is not imposing a harsh to-do list. He knows our failures. He wants two people in a marriage to work hard for each other’s good, seeking to serve in whatever capacity they can.
But most of all, He wants us to see that overshadowing our shortcomings is our great need for a Savior. We can’t do it all, but He already has! Of even more value than a good wife, the Lord Himself is priceless.
