The Husband-Friend

Anchor Devotional - 06.20.13

"A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother."
(PROVERBS 18:24)

John 15:9-15

The first year of marriage can be both the sweetest and the most difficult. Marrying Adrian meant moving to a new town away from my family, my sister, my mentor, and my best friend. It meant leaving the church I had grown up in. It meant starting over with new people and looking for a new job. I was lonely, and to be honest, I still am sometimes. But I am thankful for the dear friend I have in my husband – the man who is right by my side through the ups and downs of the days and weeks and months. Every day is a chance to grow closer and make memories with the friend who has promised to stick with me.

Jesus has entered into a deep friendship with us, a relationship that our earthly marriages are a small reflection of. He has united Himself to us and promises never to leave us or forsake us. Sharing our joys and our sorrows, He speaks to us, loves us, carries our burdens. While my husband and his friendship are precious, they cannot truly fulfill me as Jesus can. He draws near and tells us that we are His.
