"If we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself."
(2 TIMOTHY 2:13)

Jeremiah 3
What is your faithfulness record? If I am honest with myself, I remember many times when I have with good intentions promised something but have not come through. The history of Israel is like this. Her chronicled unfaithfulness is painful in the context of God’s saving work. At the very moment God was revealing His presence on the top of Mount Sinai (Exodus 20), reminding Israel of how He saved them from Egypt and calling them to obedience, His people were wildly worshipping a calf at the base of the mountain. Jeremiah 3 paints a similar picture.

So is God finished with His people? To this painful question come two answers: Jesus and union. Jesus obeyed all the commands expected of Israel. And He actually took the punishment on Himself that Israel deserved. Then Jesus went even farther. He tells Israel and us that we belong to him, united to Him as a husband is joined to his wife.

The Church is Christ’s body to such a deep level that it is as if we were one, and He will not disown Himself.
