Advent, beginning several Sundays before Christmas, is the season observed by many Christians as the time of expectant waiting and preparation for celebrating Jesus’ birth. The word itself comes from the Latin word meaning “coming.” But even a small child who knows nothing of word origins or church traditions understands that with the first day of December comes excitement leading up to Christmas day.
Another word that sounds close to “advent” is “adventure.” Let’s approach this Advent season with a renewed sense of adventure. Might we frame these December weeks as a bold undertaking of an exciting or unusual experience?
When the Old Testament prophets spoke of a coming Savior, surely a thrill of excitement overtook those first listeners. Then hundreds of years passed with waiting, and the anticipation may have waned. By the time the foretold Messiah arrived in the flesh, most everyone missed Him altogether.
