"'Dear woman, here is your son,' and to the disciple,
'Here is your mother.' From that time on, this disciple
took her into his home."
(JOHN 19:26-27)

John 19:25-27
This scene comes just before Jesus’ death on the cross. It almost seems irrelevant in light of the cosmic drama going on. But it is a very personal and tender exchange right in the midst of the stark reality of death and sin.

If you have ever been around people in severe pain, you’ll know their thoughts are most often on themselves and their pain. Truly, it is hard to focus on anything else. But here Jesus shows the loving character of God even in the midst of His pain. Jesus loved His mother. He also loved John. In the agony He was enduring, Jesus tended to the pain of a mother losing her son and to a young man losing his friend. Jesus loved us enough to endure the physical pain of the cross, and even more so to endure the agony of His Father’s judgment for the sin for all mankind. Wondrously, throughout the anguish and torment, He had you and me in mind.

John would care for Mary for the rest of her earthly days. You are cared for, friend, by the One who calls you friend and willingly gave His perfect life for you.
