“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:19a, 20
“Don’t worry. I’m with you.” Can you remember a time you heard those sweet words of assurance from your mom or dad? You felt ok because your parent would be there. Those were the comforting words Jesus gave His disciples when He commissioned them to go into all the world and preach the good news of salvation. Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase from The Message says, “I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” It isn’t easy for any of us to make always promises. We can try hard to always be there for family members or church friends. But the reality is our “always” often turns into “sometimes.” When Jesus makes a promise, He always keeps it.
The disciples went everywhere preaching, teaching, and baptizing. They learned to survive long days of persecution, sometimes facing death. They were faithful because of Jesus’ unshakable promise to be with them. They learned quickly that the promise He had made was a certainty. Jesus is saying the same thing to us today: “I will be with you always!”
