“‘Lord, if it’s you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’ ‘Come,’ he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.”

Matthew 14:28-29
My husband, two boys, and I set sail from New Bern, North Carolina, for the British Virgin Islands in December of 2007. Our intention was to sell everything we owned, simplify to life aboard, and see the world. Neither my husband nor I grew up sailing. In fact, both of us are from landlocked states, Vermont and Oklahoma. So when Andy told me he wanted to sail around the world as a family, my first response was, “We’re gonna die!”
We began taking lessons and reading books on sailing, provisioning, navigation, and weather. I found this very challenging, like learning a new language. Like Peter, I was bid to “come” step out of (or into, in this case) the boat, out of what felt comfortable and safe.
Are you being asked to step out into something the Lord is calling you to? Is there an unknown ahead? Jesus told Peter not to be afraid though He knew Peter’s fears. He knows your fears, too. Just as Jesus immediately reached out His hand to catch Peter, so you can trust your Savior to catch you when you step out in faith.
