"Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me."

John 15:4
One of my biggest challenges while in prison for years is staying close to those I love. I am grateful for the ways I can communicate (letters, phone calls, and occasional e-mail), but these often seem like slow or outdated modes. Using text messages, Facebook, skype, or instant messaging is impossible. And unless there is regular two-way communication, we quickly lose track of each other.
The very same thing can happen in our relationship with God, even though we have a kind of communication that is far quicker, easier, and more reliable than any of our modern, technological modes. We have prayer. But if we go days (weeks?) without talking to God and listening to what He has to say to us through His Word and Holy Spirit, we quickly lose track of His work in our lives.
When Jesus urges us to “remain in me,” He wants us to be in constant contact with Him. He’s made Himself ever-available to us so that we have no excuse for “not getting a hold of” Him. Listen closely… He’s always ready to hear you and lead you.
