"You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory...I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds."
(PSALM 73:24, 28)

Psalm 73
Have you ever lingered over the question of why God allows evil people to prosper? You may read or hear of their accomplishments and financial success and seemingly charmed lives. It is not difficult to wonder along with the psalmist about the “wicked” who are “always carefree” and “increase in wealth” (v. 12). I had a friend who could hardly get beyond her thoughts of how unfair this was. She stopped by one day, and I dreaded hearing her list of complaints against others and God.

But our meeting was remarkable and delightful. She had been reading through the book of Psalms and was stopped short in Psalm 73. Though she resonated with the writer’s words of disdain for the ungodly in the opening verses, she saw herself in verse 21: “I was senseless and ignorant.” She was softened by the assuring words that followed: “Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand… Whom have I in heaven but you” (v. 23, 25)?

The Lord moved in my friend’s heart that day. When He becomes our refuge, joy washes over us.
