"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins and purify us
from all unrighteousness."
(1 JOHN 1:9)

Exodus 32
We’re good at making excuses. Look at these actual accident reports filed with insurance companies, for example: “A pedestrian hit me and went under my car.” “Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have.” “I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way.”

While those are humorous, they’re nothing compared to the statement Aaron made to Moses regarding the golden calf which the people worshiped while Moses was on the mountain receiving the Ten Commandments. “Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf” (Exodus 32:24)! Who does Aaron think Moses is – or God, for that matter! – to fall for that line?

Before you condemn too harshly, however, look to your own heart. Recall some of the excuses you may have used for your own sin. Frankly, I’m glad that God is a gracious God, that He knows how we are formed and remembers that we are dust. He doesn’t buy into our excuses; He extends His grace as we repent.
