“By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.”

Hebrews 11:8
Abraham journeyed. Israel was exiled. The apostle Peter calls every Christian a sojourner and an exile (1 Peter 2:11, ESV). In fact, Scripture often compares the Christian faith to a journey. We are a people passing through, citizens of a heavenly kingdom, temporarily away from our everlasting home. This is as true for the disciple who has never left his hometown as it is for the one who has no town to call home.

Every journey requires some sort of equipment, and every wise traveler packs for the occasion. An explorer needs a map and compass. No astronaut can do without a spacesuit and oxygen. Even a trip to the grocery store is aided by a list and shopping cart. Not all equipment is material, however. Many expeditions also require courage, wisdom, and perseverance.

We might describe Christianity as walking after Christ in the footsteps of faith (Colossians 2:6; Mark 8:34; Romans 4:12). What does this journey require us to bring? Look to Scripture. If we would reach our destination, what must we absolutely have?
