Next month is the shortest month of the year. Have you ever wondered why? If you live in a cold climate, you may be happy it’s short because it means you’re that much closer to spring. But that’s not why February is so short.


The origin is a bit fuzzy. Some historians believe Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus both wanted months of their own (July and August), and each took a day from February to make his own month longer and “better.” Others suggest it goes back to the second king of Rome who wanted to make the calendar more accurate. At that time there were only 10 months; supposedly he added January and February.


No matter the truth, the reality is February comes and goes before we realize it. In fact, all of our days do! This could sound a bit morose,
but David wanted God to show him the measure of his days. He wanted to know of his life’s end. When we understand how finite we truly are, we begin to see our need for God. We don’t need more days – not even during the shortest month. What we need is faith in Him.
