"And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."
(1 CORINTHIANS 6:11)

1 Corinthians 9:6-11;
2 Peter 3:9
When we think of our theme this month, it is easier to embrace the idea of Jesus as Friend than it is to see ourselves as the sinners He befriends. Passages like today’s are sobering reminders of the depths of our sinfulness. Whether we acted them out or not, having a sin nature in us means we, too, were “guilty on all counts.”

Praise God for today’s Scripture passage! Who we were is no longer who we are. By the grace of God through Christ, we are “washed,” made clean from the filth of our sin. We now are “sanctified,” that is, set apart to God (see also Ephesians 2:10). And we are “justified,” our guilt removed and replaced with the righteousness of the very Son of God. All of this is often called, “regeneration.” It’s the idea that something is made new.

Today’s passages also remind us of how God wants us to view unbelievers. Since we know Him as the Friend of sinners, He bids us to live in humility and understand that if it weren’t for Him,
we, too, would still be lost in our sins.
