“Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God… who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. He led you through the vast and dreadful desert.”

Deuteronomy 8:11a, 14b-15a
Today concludes our survey of prodigal grace, God’s overflowing love in Christ for the most unlikely and undeserving people. Let’s not part without reviewing lessons the Lord taught Israel during their 40-year journey from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. Take note of Moses’ parting thoughts in Deuteronomy.
Do you see his emphasis on recalling God’s mercy in salvation (8:1-2, 11, 14, 18-19)? We need frequent reminders of the tremendous price He paid at the cross to purchase us. Keep in mind that He chose us not because we were already on the path to holiness, but simply because He loved us (7:6-8). Also mark God’s grace in providing for our every need (8:3-10, 15-16) and in protecting us from falsehood (v. 17-20).
As I face more than 25 years of my remaining prison sentence, these promises are precious to me. Perhaps you’re imprisoned as well—to fear, hatred, an unforgiving spirit, or sin. The Lord never abandons His own. If I, behind bars, can cling to Jesus Christ and His abundantly prodigal grace, you can do the same!
