“In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”

Ephesians 2:21-22
Does it seem like everything around you is breaking down? Your car, your appliances, your body, your family? Our very nation with its values and security seems compromised. This breaking down can be unsettling and frightening. But there is another kind of “breaking down,” and this kind is actually productive. If you are planning to remodel a house, you may have to demolish a wall. In order to develop new habits, you first tear down old ones. To love others well, you must break down the bitterness that keeps you apart.
In the early church, some demolition was needed to form a new dwelling called “the Body of Christ.” Jews and Gentiles, males and females, slaves and free men had to tear down the dividing wall of hostility—old practices and prejudices—to create a holy temple, redeemed by Christ’s blood and filled with His Spirit. This was to be the household of God. “For [Jesus] himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility” (v. 14) through the cross.
