"For who makes you different from anyone else?
What do you have that you did not receive?
And if you did receive it, why do you
boast as though you did not?"
(1 CORINTHIANS 4:7)

1 Corinthians 4:6-13
While we all receive the Gospel as lowly sinners, humble before God, we too soon get caught up in our own selves. We begin to boast so we have it in our minds that even in the kingdom of heaven, we are somehow ahead of another. We boast that our theology or our church denomination is better than others’. It becomes necessary to set aside many of the externals and focus anew on the clear, simple Gospel truth found in the
Word of God.

The early church in Corinth knew of this. Some were holding themselves up as “better” because they were taught by Peter, some by Paul, or some by Apollos. Have you seen Christians be boastful today in much this same way?

We have all received the Word of God by one means or another. How easily we can slip into bragging that somehow we had better insight into God because of the status of our teacher, or the ability of our own intellect. The truth is we received it all – the teacher, the Gospel, our intellect, and the Holy Spirit – at the overwhelming grace of our Lord.
