"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights."

James 1:17
When the time came for me to turn myself in at my assigned federal prison, I was allowed to bring almost nothing with me. I was told to send my license, passport and Bible back with the people who dropped me off. I was issued prison clothing, and my civilian clothes were mailed home.
I confess I have a tendency to think of all my stuff as, well… mine. But if I were to take a step back, I see that even my skills and talents and ability to earn are gifts from God. All that I cling to so tightly is actually evidence of God’s generosity. My wife and children, certainly beyond what I deserve, are a lavish gift from God. God wants His gifts to bring us joy as they remind us of His goodness and love. Sometimes we hold on to the gift so tightly that we let go of the Giver. When those good things become ultimate things, they also become idols in our lives.
Let’s consider what it is that we need to lay back down at the Savior’s feet, giving Him the glory and honor and power, for He created all things (see Revelation 4:11).
