“Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”

Psalm 139:12
Often we’re asked if we sail at night. On an off-shore crossing, we have to. We can’t anchor in 1,000 feet of water with only 200 feet of anchor chain. Some skilled sailors “heave to,” which is backing the sails in a way that causes the boat to “stop,” so they can rest. But we have many helmsmen aboard, so we take shifts and try to sleep on our time off.
On our first passage, we nearly cried every sunset. It seemed that something scary happened each night, and we couldn’t see to anticipate what it would be. A squall might blow up, or a flying fish would whack the person at the wheel. Darkness prohibited us from seeing the waves, so instead of steering with them, we’d frequently get tossed off a wave and land with a thud or get splashed and be wet and cold.
Life is fraught with darkness. We fear what we cannot see, what we can’t anticipate. But as a watchman waits for the morning (see Psalm 130) knowing sunrise will come, so we follow Jesus, knowing He is with us. The dark is as light to Him. Trust Him to lead you.
