Husbands,… be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

1 Peter 3:7
One impact of my job loss was that it put a scrutinizing light on our marriage. Life had gone fairly well for my wife and me, but much had been taken for granted. Occasionally we read the Bible and prayed together; we attended church and supported its ministries. However, it wasn’t until we faced the prospect of losing our entire savings and needing affordable housing that we considered what was of true importance.
Job loss gave us the chance to spend time together and listen to each other. We reflected on past events we had not dealt with honestly. My wife had raw memories of times I’d put the job above her and the family. Issues surfaced that needed reconciliation.
Job loss brought to light that we had taken the Lord and our marriage for granted. Now we start each day together in devotions and prayer. Might you consider this practice as you face the trials the Lord has allowed in your life? Don’t worry about your failures or inconsistency; “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24).
