“He asked me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ I said, ‘O Sovereign LORD, you alone know.’”

Ezekiel 37:3
When someone you know dies, these words carry deep meaning. View a lifeless body where previously your loved one was alive, and these words from Ezekiel have weight. “Can these bones live?” you may ask, even as you can see that there is not one trace of life left in your loved one.
If you’re ever alongside someone as they take their last breath, you know the answer. “O Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” It is the Lord who gives life. When the spirit is gone and a lifeless body remains, you are made strikingly aware of who the Giver of life is. Through His breath of life, our flesh is animated. He gives life to jars of clay like us. But He gives us life again when we come to know Him as our Lord and Savior—new life, resurrection life, which can never be extinguished. He came that we might have eternal life and be granted freedom from death.
When you are in the very presence of death, still take hope, for the Lord gives life. Not in this life, but in the glorious life that awaits us, He will make dry bones alive again!
