You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

Exodus 20:4
We decided to scatter Elizabeth’s ashes off the coast of her favorite beach. My husband is a private pilot, so he flew me and two of our daughters to the location. We watched in silence as our oldest daughter released the ashes into the ocean below. It was so final. He turned the plane around and flew along the beach once more, this time giving the pilot “wing wave” as if to say good-bye to Elizabeth.
The emotional “letting go” has been a much more difficult process, as many of you may also know in your lives. We want to hold onto everything that reminds us of our loved one who’s gone. Some of that is natural and good, but eventually we all have to answer the question: “Whom do we love more: God or our loved one?”
While cherishing our memories of Elizabeth, we have to let go of our “right” to her. This is an ongoing process because we value deeply the time we had with Elizabeth, and the loss and the sorrow are still present. If you, too are in a hard place like this, take up your cross and follow Jesus.
