"Then Jesus answered him, 'Will you really lay your life for me?'"
(John 13:38)

John 13:31-38
No doubt Peter’s claim that he would lay down his life for Jesus was sincere. In the garden, Peter was the one who picked up his sword to defend Jesus and presumably die for Him in an act of bravery. But it didn’t happen at all like Peter imagined, in one glorious act of heroism.

Still, at the end of his life Peter did die for Christ, didn’t he? We know from other historical documents that he was hung upside down on a cross. This came because of his undying devotion to Christ. He had spent years in persecution and self-denial, laboring to spread the good news of Jesus.

It’s in the day-to-day activities of life that we are to lay down our lives, working for Jesus in various ways, not recognized by any except Him. The tasks may be tedious, but choosing each day to deny ourselves, to put others first, to give of our time is the least we can do as His disciples, especially when Christians in some parts of the world are losing their very lives for Christ. Let’s pray for them as we seek to give our lives as we are able.
