"Forgetting what is behind and straining toward
what is ahead, I press on..."
(Philippians 3: 13b-14a)

Philippians 3:12-16
I recently met up with some out-of-town friends whom I hadn’t seen in years. Over a late night dinner and early coffee, our conversation turned to what it is to live a life following Jesus. We talked about how life to the fullest means moving forward out of faith and not in fear.

It’s easy to look back and live in fear and doubt. Paul didn’t say we would just glide easily toward what lies ahead. He used the word “straining.” In other words, we’d be laboring and struggling, exerting with all we’ve got toward what lies ahead. It takes courage to look to the future with a sense of hope. But because of God’s promises to us of what He has in store, we keep on. Like Paul, we press on to the goal of “the prize for which God has called me heavenward in
Christ Jesus” (v.14).

As we continue to reflect on what it is to have life to the full, life to the fullest, life abundant, we can declare with David in Psalm 31 “How abundant is your goodness,
O Lord, which you have stored up for those who fear you”
(v. 19)!
