Just As You Are

Anchor Devotional - 04.16.13

"All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away."
(JOHN 6:37)

Matthew 11:28-30;
John 6:35-40

In her early thirties, Charlotte Elliott became permanently bedridden, leaving her despondent and angry toward God. One evening, family friend and evangelist Dr. Caesar Malan asked if she was a Christian, which she resented. Soon afterward, though, she admitted to him that she wanted to know Christ but didn’t know how. “You must come just as you are, a sinner, to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,” he replied. She did, finding amazing peace and joy.

Fourteen years later, Charlotte’s brother, a pastor, was raising funds to build a school for children of poor clergymen. Charlotte longed to help, but felt useless, which led to deep spiritual conflict. She restated the Gospel in hymn verse, realizing that even then she was accepted “Just as I am.” Her hymn raised the most funds for the school and is now considered to have touched more hearts and influenced more people to accept Christ than any other song ever written.

Just as we are is enough for Jesus. He will always
welcome us.
