Of the Ten Commandments, the first four have to do with how we love God. The other six deal with how we love others. Notice that the command nearly in the center of it all, the fifth, is the only one with a promise (see Ephesians 6:2). It (along with the others) has stood the test of time. No circumstances of life in our world today have changed the fact that we are to honor our parents.

What does it mean to do this? It seems fairly straightforward when we think about younger children respecting and obeying parents. It gets more complicated if the parents have been ruthless, harsh, or wrong in their parenting. Also, heeding the fifth commandment grows in its scope when children are adults and parents face the later chapters of life.

Ideally, your mom and dad cared for and provided for you when you were young. Even if they did not, however, it is upon you to honor them. Your own children will be watching you. Honor your elderly parents with the knowledge that your ageless heavenly Father has perfectly cared for you.
