"The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted..."
(ISAIAH 61:1)

Isaiah 61:1-11
“…if God sends us such great afflictions that we are as it were swallowed up, let it not cause us to despair…but let us resist it, knowing that God still reserves mercy ready for us at the proper time. And if we languish more than we would wish, let us know that God will let the illness ripen in order to heal it better”(Sermons from Job by John Calvin, 1509-1564).

God will “heal it better.” The work of Christ is that Christ came to “heal the brokenhearted.”

What breaks your heart? Is it your own suffering? Is it the suffering of others? In essence, suffering breaks all our hearts. But did you know it breaks God’s heart most of all? Suffering under the yoke of sin in this world brings sorrow. Our troubles cannot be hidden from our Sovereign God. The “good news” that Jesus proclaimed is NOT a simplistic message like “think happy thoughts” or a delusional motto like “don’t worry, be happy.” The Good News is that Christ didn’t come to deny the suffering from sin, but to heal it and to
“heal it better.”
