For Sarah who is a trauma counselor working in Iraq alongside women and girls rescued from ISIS, the challenges are great. Rape has left so many women feeling unclean, worthless, and degraded. In a culture where chastity is highly valued, there is an added wound: shame. Fearful of a lifetime of rejection ahead of them, some see suicide as the only option. Sarah faces all this and more every day that she travels to the refugee camps to work.
Against so much pain and fear, Sarah must draw on all her training and experience working among other victims of genocide. But she needs something deeper, too, and it can only come from one source. “Jesus is my life,” she says. “He never ceases to amaze me with His capacity to meet the needs of these people. He’ll go to any extreme to show how much He cares. He’s my life, and I don’t see any existence without Him.”
Whatever our background, whatever our past, we have known a variety of hardships that have left different wounds. But every one of us is loved by the same mighty God.
