Grace in the Wilderness

Anchor Devotional - 03.14.18

“Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.”

Deuteronomy 8:4-5

When we’re in one of life’s wilderness times, we dwell on what we don’t have. A mother of a newborn is short on sleep. An unemployed man has plenty of time, but not enough money. An elderly widow is full of memories, but lacks companionship.

In today’s reading, water was the missing resource in Israel’s wilderness. As the days dragged on, they would run out of food. Eventually, their clothes would wear out, and they’d need a new pair of sandals. Normally, they would have access to all these things. But the wilderness isn’t normal, and that’s scary.

Pushed past our limits, we too are forced to cry out to God for help. When we do, we find that He isn’t limited by our lack of resources. The One who can send bread from heaven doesn’t need to dot the wilderness with grocery stores. His plenty is the source of all things, and His grace is the open hand that gives it. Water, food, clothes, employment, friends, rest—these things may all come in time. But watch and pray for His supernatural supply of grace in your life today.
