"...be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined."
(TITUS 1:8)

1 Peter 4:7-11
In my childhood, my parents often loaded the five kids into the car for cross-country trips
to visit relatives or accompany Dad on
business. Whenever we spent a Saturday night on the road, we’d scout out a church nearby for Sunday morning worship.

One day a kind couple invited our family of seven home with them after the service. In the 50s, it wasn’t easy to find a quick carryout meal, and grocery stores often closed on Sundays. I wondered how that couple could extend a spontaneous invitation to our large family – they certainly didn’t pull that fried chicken lunch out of a hat!

Actually, they had come to church prepared to show hospitality, intentionally obedient to the biblical teaching to do so. If we had not joined them that day, another family would have.

The act of Christ-like love modeled for me back then fired something in my young heart. I’ve forgotten their names and faces, but God hasn’t. Their kindness impacted me for life, an earthly living-out of the greater kindness Jesus has shown me!
