“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”

Luke 2:19
Mary’s thought life was a treasure. She received a message from the angel, Gabriel, and began her response with praise to the Lord. All that had happened and had been said about this child now unfolded before her. Although she was certain of great blessing, the road ahead would have sorrows as well. She stored her thoughts like treasure as the Lord prepared her for life ahead—both good and bad.

“Somehow he gets thoughtful… and thinks the strangest things you ever heard,” notes Bob Cratchit of his Tiny Tim in the famous Dickens Christmas tale. This beloved character, too, can prompt us to consider our own thought life. Our minds fly in many directions through life’s successes and disappointments, choosing thoughts that help or hinder us.

But Mary’s treasured thoughts point us to a deeper, richer truth: that we have the greatest treasure still in Jesus! Paul wanted his first readers and us to know the riches of Jesus Christ, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).
