Many trends have come and gone since Scarlet and Rhett stole each other’s hearts on the big screen in the classic movie Gone with the Wind. Even after 80 years, this epic film is still being watched today.
Set during the American Civil War, Gone with the Wind was the film that wouldn’t quit. Its three-hour playing time was no problem for early film-goers from 1939 to 1943. Adjusting for inflation, it’s still one of the top grossing films of all time. And “frankly,” many of its lines are still quoted.
The film’s main theme is that life is fleeting and always changing. That’s a theme we see in the Bible, too. James asks, “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (4:14). What a sobering thought. But we need to remind ourselves about another truth:
Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow (Hebrews13:8). Even though our world is constantly changing, He is not. For those of us who have put our trust in Him, this is great news that will never be gone with the wind.
