“Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the aliens living in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 31:12
At the summer camp, there were two paths we could take to our staff quarters in a small cove near the main camp: the long, high path or the shorter walk along the beach. However, when the shore path was cut off by high tides reaching the sea cliff, those who chose the easy road would then get their feet wet or, worse, slip and fall. However, I had a trick: I’d check the tide chart in the office before taking the shore path so that I would never have to turn around and go back to the longer path. Not all of the staff members had figured out my “secret knowledge” and would come asking me if it was safe to take the shore path. I wouldn’t answer with “yes” or “no,” but instead would point them to the tide chart to find the truth for themselves. God’s Word is analogous to my tide chart. He has given us free will to choose our path in life. But without His Word, we’ll regret our choices, fall, and wish for something better. The truths of Scripture really are “a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105).
