"... God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble, with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. ... through Christ our comfort overflows."
(2 CORINTHIANS 1:3-5)
When God wants us to pay close attention, He will repeat something, whether that’s teaching us the same lesson over and over in life or presenting us with the same words or phrases in His Word. In the short passage above, He repeats “comfort” five times. There is no missing His intent: God will comfort us, He will use us to comfort others, and likewise, He will use others to comfort us. In any affliction, He says, He will be there, though we may not see Him or feel His presence. But if we notice those who are loving us during times of grief and sorrow, rest assured that that is the Lord at work. Paul says He is the “God of all comfort.” All comfort, peace, love, and encouragement originate from our Father.
Knowing that your hardship will make you better able to comfort others when it’s their time of affliction is not much comfort to you in the present. But it is later. Our trials are never wasted, and God will use them to allow others to love us and to teach us to love others better in time.
ALL FORMS OF COMFORT COME FROM GOD, AND HE WILL USE US AS PART OF HIS PLAN TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COMFORTING OF HIS PEOPLE.
