“Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”

Philippians 4:5
If ever there is a picture of gentleness, it is with a parent and a newborn baby. The tenderness of Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus must have been profound as they held in their arms the very One who created them! That image of the gentle setting in the innkeeper’s stable starkly contrasts with modern life.
Today on Christmas Eve people are vying for parking spots so they can find a last-minute gift. Harsh customers, exasperated sales people, and tired donation-seekers fill the scene at the mall— not exactly one of gentleness and peace!
But Jesus came to us gently that evening in Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph were alone; it was still. The calmness would not last long, for the storms of life were coming. Jesus, while remaining calm Himself, would turn the world upside down. He quieted the raging waves with just a word. He knelt down next to prostitutes and sick people, healing them with gentle words or touches. He reached out and gathered little children onto His lap. In Jesus’ gentleness is enormous strength… for you and me.
