It happens to all of us eventually. One day we look in the bathroom mirror, and we notice we have grown older. A first wrinkle line appears. A first gray hair stands out in defiance. For me it began a few years ago with a couple “stray” gray whiskers in my beard. As it stands now, the brown hairs may be winning the battle, but they’re losing the war. And from the back of my head, it looks like plenty of them left the battlefield entirely. Aging not only changes our hair color, our skin, and our appearance; it also changes our diet and health, our energy level, our temperament, our daily activities. Getting older changes everything.
But Christ changes getting older, too. We can borrow Paul’s words about his trials in ministry and draw comfort from them. In this life our outward selves remain subject to the consequences of the fall, but inwardly the Lord is renewing us as we advance in faithful obedience to His commands.
