"...so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life..."
(PHILIPPIANS 2:14-16)

Philippians 2:5-18
You may have seen some fireworks a couple nights ago for your New Year’s Eve celebrations. There is nothing like the magnificence of all those lights in the sky. Before we spend time this month dwelling on what Jesus meant when He said He came that we might have life to the full, I’d like you to think about fireworks.

The patterns and colors and variety… the sounds and the size of them… all of these things bring on our “oohs” and “ahhhs”. In some ways we are like that. As believers in Jesus, “life to the full” means we have a joy that bursts out of us, like fireworks into the sky.

But living life to the full comes to us in a way that is probably counterintuitive to many. It’s actually not about making a big show. We do, indeed, shine like stars in the universe… when we imitate Jesus – laying down our own rights, serving others, humbling ourselves. That’s when we shine! That’s when we light up the sky. When we consider others as more important and when we hold out the Word of life, then the fireworks begin!
