"He replied, 'You of little faith, why are you so afraid?' Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm."
(MATTHEW 8:26)

Matthew 8:23-27
When I was in third grade, a tornado struck the small town where I lived. I spent an hour huddled under a desk at school, waiting for the storm to pass, fearing that I or my family might die. As I rode the bus home, I saw uprooted trees and houses missing roofs. By eight years old, I was developing an awe and fear of the power of nature.

As veteran fishermen, the disciples knew, too, what it meant to be in a squall out on the Sea of Galilee where sudden, violent storms were familiar. This storm was great – perhaps not unlike my tornado from grade school – and they were at the mercy of the threatening wind and the waves.

Nature is immensely powerful because every part of it answers the voice of the One who is its Creator. With Jesus in their boat, the disciples knew they could turn to Him and cry, “Save us!” Even so, when He stilled the storm with a word, they were amazed. “What sort of man is this?” He is the God-man, Christ Jesus, Who created the wind and waves and has power over them.
