"...they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance and said to Moses, 'Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.'"
(EXODUS 20:18-19)

Exodus 20
The Lord appeared to the Israelites at Mt. Sinai after their exodus from Egypt. He appeared in glory and power, with thunder and lightning, with a loud trumpet blast and shrouded in thick, black smoke. Wouldn’t you be terrified? They feared that the Lord would destroy them on the spot. They had just witnessed the ten plagues and experienced God’s protection while the Egyptians suffered. At the Red Sea they saw that God used His miraculous power to save them and destroy their enemies. But here they feared God’s power, begging Moses to stand between them and God… to mediate for them.

Believe that God is on your side and that He will deliver you. You can anchor your faith in that because you have a Mediator, Christ Jesus, the one Moses points us to. Our sin is enough to justify our destruction, but all of us in Christ know that God’s wrath was poured out onto Jesus at the cross instead. God sees us as having Christ’s righteousness. Now we can draw near to God, hear His words, and have hope that banishes fear.
