"Then their eyes were opened and they
recognized him..."
(LUKE 24:31)

Luke 24:13-33
I love how this downcast pair on the road to Emmaus just didn’t get it. They are in total confusion about what has happened, so it feels comedic when Jesus Himself asks them, “What things?” Not until He reveals Himself to them do they recognize Him. The Bible has numerous places where someone’s eyes were suddenly opened. It’s as though the mysteries and the truth of God are hiding in plain sight, but they needed God to show them where they were. Isn’t that how it is for most of us?

When they turned three, my kids had their eyes tested by a doctor. She held up a pixelated picture of a butterfly and noted that if you are color blind, you won’t see the butterfly even though it’s right in front of you. There are many who encountered Jesus and saw nothing. There still are many who read Scripture and see nothing. It takes the power of God and His Spirit to make the Gospel show up for us.

May God open our eyes to show us where He is hiding in plain sight, so that our hearts, too, might burn within us.
