“They gave Moses this account: ‘We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! ...The land we explored devours those living in it.’”

Numbers 13:27, 32
God’s promises are just as we expect— or are they? When the spies came back, they reported to have seen just what God had promised and more. But the “more” caused them to respond in fear and despair. Yes, it was lush and plentiful, but the people living there made them feel like grasshoppers. The obstacles were more than they expected.
When my husband and I first faced the opportunity to adopt an “at risk” little girl, we were thrilled. We sensed the Lord had much to teach our whole family through her. When she became our daughter and her disabilities became more evident, however, I felt inadequate to raise her. Like the Israelite spies, the challenges were more than I expected.
Eighteen years later with the obstacles still present, the Lord faithfully continues to provide and teach us through our special girl. God’s promises in His Word are flawless; His grace is perfect. When we believe we are experiencing God’s promise to us but feel overwhelmed in the fulfillment of it, we can trust Him to carry us through.
