“You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.”

Psalm 139:5
Perhaps you know the suffocating, depressing darkness of a lonely night. You hear the ticking of the clock. You know you need to sleep, but you watch each hour pass. When such loneliness grips, thoughts like “nobody loves me,” or “even God has turned His back on me” descend on you.

You’re not alone in your alone-ness. The average American has about half as many good friends as he/she did 30 years ago. Many of our community organizations are on life support. We are constantly relocating for new jobs and don’t bother to get to know our neighbors. You think that the family has broken down in our culture? Our communities are even worse!

If you’re someone who looks back on a family life where you did not feel loved, and if you live largely disconnected in your community, there is hope. The Lord gives us His church as both our family and our community. The loneliness you face can be overturned by friendship. And the greatest friendship you’ll ever know is in Jesus. God has never left you. His hand is lovingly upon you.
