“I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.”

Psalm 34:4
SUN In the summer of 2015 we sailed from New Bern, North Carolina, to Martha’s Vineyard. It had been a while since we sailed on the Atlantic, and I was nervous. I focused on Psalm 34:4, asking God to truly deliver me from fear. He did! But smooth sailing certainly was not part of the deliverance!
We planned to sail off shore and head straight for Nantucket, spend a couple of days there, and then sail to Martha’s Vineyard. This would have taken about four days at sea. Not far into the trip, we met tropical storm Bill. Heavy wind and rain tore our mainsail, and we lost our steering. The wheel came right off in Andy’s hands! Tossed about like a salad, we started getting sick. Andy fixed the helm between bouts of feeding the fish, but he was completely spent, having worked through the night. By morning it was up to me and the boys to get us to a safe harbor. We turned toward Delaware and eventually anchored in the Harbor of Refuge.
We marveled at how I wasn’t afraid. God—in His miraculous way—had completely delivered me from fear.
