“But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly.”

Hebrews 12:22
What is it like to come home from a deployment? To step from the sand into the chopper, knowing you will likely never return to this land made sacred by the sacrifices of your friends? When you go back to a place you used to call home, will anyone be able to relate to at all to what you’ve experienced?
As our helicopter lifted from our post and flew over the surrounding streets where a young airman had been killed just two weeks before, I wondered what home really was for me. A trying time in your life has the power to show you how temporary this life is. A trial that brings you face-to-face with death will make you realize that you just don’t feel at home in this world anymore.
Sometimes the heartaches and difficulties of this life serve to redirect our focus from all the trappings of this earth and place our focus instead on the hope we have for eternity in heaven. “Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). Coming home could never be better.
