Death is the final enemy (1 Corinthians 15:26). Though every one of us awaits death, it is not how things were originally meant to be. Death and the sorrow it brings entered into God’s “very good” (Genesis 1:31) creation when Adam sinned. Because of Adam’s sin, the whole creation now groans under its curse (Romans 8:22). But Jesus Christ came to this earth to destroy death forever! That’s the Gospel – the good news. Because of what Christ has done for His people, we can even take comfort in the face of death.


My older brother, Bill, died of cancer a few months ago. Bill was a believer and went joyfully to his death, knowing that it was not the end of His life, but a real beginning. His Savior had guaranteed it! Bill simply believed His promises. Like Peter, Bill said, “Lord to whom else shall I turn? You have the words of eternal life.” One day soon, I too will breathe my last. But I have comfort knowing that, like Bill, Jesus Christ has destroyed death forever. Because He lives, I too shall live!
