"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ."
(PHILIPPIANS 3:20)

Philippians 3:17-4:1
When I was a boy, my family and I would take a boat from the Southern California coast out to Catalina Island. In all my years of going there for snorkeling, swimming, and sight-seeing, we never actually stayed on the island. At close of day, there we’d be in the long line of people boarding the ferry bound back for the mainland.

Finally, last summer we rented a condo and stayed for a week on Catalina to celebrate my dad’s birthday. It occurred to me that following Jesus for me used to look like visiting the island for a day here or there. I could tell others how great He was, yet I still had one foot in line, waiting to go back to the mainland.

Until each of us decides to toss the ropes aboard that way of life and wave it farewell from the dock, we will have no idea of all that awaits us in Christ. And once we do, we will see that our citizenship goes even beyond a whole-hearted commitment to Him in this life; it reaches to His whole-hearted commitment to make us citizens with Him in heaven one day.
