There’s always one—the guy who needs absolute proof. Perhaps that’s you. It also was Thomas. He said to Jesus, “Unless I see your nail holes and stick my hand in your side, there’s no way I can believe it.”
It’s hard to read about Thomas as he walked by sight rather than by faith because he reminds us an awful lot of ourselves. I bet I would have reacted the same way if I’d been in his shoes. How about you? Either way, Jesus understood Thomas, and He understands our lack of faith too.
Jesus didn’t respond with indignation (which is how we might respond when we read this story). He just approached Thomas and asked him to see and touch for himself all the proofs of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Then Jesus told him plainly, “Don’t be unbelieving. Believe.”
It’s stunning to read of Thomas’ immediate, humbled, decisive words. No doubt remains at all as he declares, “My Lord and my God!” Make that your statement today. When you’ve been with Jesus and see the proofs of His love in your life, how can you do anything but believe?
